Jimmy Flynn
An Australian Railway Story
Jimmy Flynn is a working-class young man in the 1880s Blue Mountains, west of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia.
Jimmy was brought up in suburban Sydney in a Christian family.
He has always loved steam trains, and his life’s aim was to become a railway engineer.
He gains employment on the Blue Mountains railways and, being a poetic fellow, he writes poetry in the same plain voice he speaks, and goes home to his young wife Sarah, who is expecting their child.
The Hawkesbury River is in his blood. So is smoke, track, and the wish for a better life for himself, Sarah and their unborn child.
Jimmy Flynn is a story of labour, love, and the choice between the rugged mountains and the flat alluvial land — mining and strength on one side, rich soil and children on the other.
Life is what you make it. Jimmy is just beginning his journey into family life.
